Advocacy & Policy

World TB Day 2015 - Aeras at US Institute of Peace

Aeras works with partners and stakeholders to promote the importance of TB research and development, with a focus on raising awareness of the urgent funding needs for TB vaccine R&D. We have successfully advocated to governments around the world, including the U.K., Netherlands, Germany, U.S., and South Africa, to implement policies favorable to TB vaccine R&D.

Aeras also partners with international advocacy organizations, including the Global TB Caucus and the Stop TB Partnership‘s Working Group on New TB Vaccines to ensure TB vaccine R&D remains a global priority.

Key progress includes:

United States

In the United States, Aeras successfully planned and executed a TB & Global Health R&D Congressional staff delegation to South Africa with TB Alliance and Global Health Technologies Coalition, in coordination with U.S. government agencies. Along with other U.S. stakeholders, Aeras worked with the President’s Commission Combatting Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria to create the National Action Plan on Combatting Multidrug-Resistant TB, and strongly advocated to the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) to include TB vaccine development as one of its top two TB R&D needs in their report.

Africa

Aeras provided input into the development of the Africa Union Catalytic Framework to End AIDS, TB and Eliminate Malaria in Africa by 2030 and had meetings with the African Union to discuss the importance of TB R&D and the need for political commitment. In South Africa, Aeras worked with senior leadership from the National Department of Health to support the establishment of the South African Chapter of the Global TB Caucus.

Europe

In Europe, Aeras has worked with partners and policy makers to raise the visibility of TB vaccines and the importance of investment in TB vaccine R&D. Aeras recently provided background information on the global TB epidemic and the importance of a TB vaccine in curbing the epidemic to the UK government-sponsored Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, which led to the inclusion of an entire section on the importance of TB vaccines in their report.

Asia

As an active player in the Asia-Pacific region, Aeras has formalized relationships with multiple governments and leading biotech partners, and successfully advocated for the Global Forum on TB Vaccines in the region, which broadened scientific discourse beyond the “big name” Western biotechs and increased exposure of Asian researchers to the global TB community. Along with with RESULTS and other partners, Aeras also contributed to the passage of World TB Day motions in Australia's House of Representatives and Senate, leading several MPs to reference the importance of TB vaccines in their speeches.
